From the PREZ
Prez Sez, by Walter Pierzchala
Hoping to see all of you at our annual Memorial Fun
Fly on June 10. Door
prizes will be awarded to club members around 12
Noon. Another safety
precaution - when fueling your aircraft use glasses
to protect your eyes.
Nitromethane can irritate your eyes for about a week
and can possibly cause
eye damage. Don't take chances! Remember Safety
is the club's primary
concern. If one is vigilant we will enjoy years of
flying. At the present
time, I am completing the necessary paperwork in
order that our club may
qualify as a leader club as defined by the AMA.
More details will be
announced in the next issue of Hear Ye. The June
meeting will be held at
the field at 7 PM. In case of rain, at the Church
at 8 PM.
AMA LEADER CLUBS
Ernie McGauley
For the last several months our club president
Walt Pierzchala has
been putting in a lot of time in having our club qualify
as an AMA Leader
Club. It just happens that at this time that
our District III vice
president has been actively encouraging clubs in
our district to pursue
this recognition. Our club has already been in compliance
with many of the
qualifying requirements. Walt has been putting these
items together and
communicating with AMA to make sure that we meet
all of the categories.
Some of the things required are sound compliance, and
club rules posted at
the flying site as well as membership policies. In the
last news letter you
saw Walter and the two Joes (Weizer and Yalove)
repairing our bulletin
board at the field.

HE DID IT
Bud Klopp
Harry Charnock has soloed and is now a qualified
pilot. All of the
"Breakfast Club" knows Harry, and he comes
to all of the meetings, so any
more of you also know him. Harry has shown incredible
patience, tenacity,
and determination. You should all make it a point to
congradulate Harry.
Harry did have a little problem getting the routine
down but he never gave
up. He committed money, time, and heartbreak to this
hobby but he never
quit. Harry is a great guy to know. If you don't know
him, make it a point
to look him up and give him an "AT ABOY".
Harry, I will miss our scheduled time together.

I keep this article on file as a permanent resident.
The
subject comes up at least once a year in one form or
another.
At the end of the season last year, at the field, an
interesting observation came up regarding the balancing
of
propellers. I noticed a safety sticker was still on
a
Master Airscrew prop. I asked the owner of the trainer
if he
had balanced the prop. I knew the answer before I asked
the
question. ?No?, but he didn't?t have too, the prop was
O.K. An
experienced flyer standing next to us said he used plastic
props and that he didn't?t have to balance them. He
used the
scimitar shaped gray plastic ones.....NOT!
To start with, all propellers must be balanced. Wooden
propellers, plastic propellers, epoxy-fiber propellers,
three bladed propellers-- all propellers that came from
any
store at any time MUST be balanced. If you don?t ,
you can
ruin your engine, or quit literally shake your plane
apart ,
and heaven only knows what other damage. I might add
that
some engines won?t run if the prop is too badly out
of
balance. Some times the engines know better than their
owners.
I have asked several people, all of whom are good builders
and fliers, what balancing a prop meant. I was surprised
at
the answers, most of which were not exactly correct,
although, close enough so as not to do much damage.
A
balanced propeller will stay in any position that you
put
it. Vertical, horizontal, at 45 degree. -any position-
it will
not rotate out of that position. It is not advisable
to try
to balance a propeller while outside, as a slight breeze
may
cause the prop to rotate, thus you get a false reading.
Most propellers can be balanced with a piece of sand
paper, the epoxy-fiber props, Master Airscrew for example,
should be de-flashed before balancing. This is more
easily
done using a razor or X-Acto blade. The flashing on
these
props can be very sharp, and can cut your hand while
just
handling them. Three bladed props should be balanced
the
same way. They must stay in the position placed.
This may seem like a mundane topic but believe me,
if you
mess up a plane or engine because of an out of balance
prop
you will feel pretty bad, plus you may never figure
out what
caused the problem in the first place. Loose screws
can
ruin your whole day.
The other day at the field I noticed what appeared
to be
excessive vibration on my plane. I might add that the
prop
has been on the plane for three summers. When I got
home I
discovered the prop needed re-balancing. Why, I don?t
know.
Maybe the grass or dirt messes up the balance. Any way
I
washed it and re-balanced it. I think now I will make
this a
part of my preventative maintenance check.
Another thing regarding propellers. I find that when
using
white. That way they are visible. Balance after painting.
Master Airscrew has a very good web site with tips
and
suggestions on how to balance a prop: www.masterairscrew.com
I have plenty of other suggestions and tips, most of
which
I learned from experience (usually bad). I will write
about
them from time to time.

THE RED FLAG
The red flag (it is really orange) is stored in the
drum next to the
bulletin board.
If there is ever an altercation on the field with either
a visitor or a
member who is violating Field Management Policies, any
member is authorized
to post the "RED FLAG". This indicates to
park authorities that there is a
problem on the field. While the red flag is posted,
ALL activity on the
field must stop. The flag will remain posted until the
problem is resolved.
